After Halloween, it’s off to the races for most of our clients. Everyone is preparing for the holidays, end of the year deadlines, parties, and travel, oh my! While the pandemic might put a slight damper on some of those events, it doesn’t change the fact that the holidays are right around the corner and our clients will still have plenty going on. As a trainer, how can you set yourself up for success in these last couple of months of 2020?

Here are three questions to help you make the most of your time this month and next:

  1. What is one thing that didn’t go as planned this past year?

Was there a program that flopped, a system that isn’t working for you, or a business strategy that needs to be adjusted? Now is the perfect time to reflect on what worked for you last year and what didn’t work and how you can adjust for the new year coming up.

  1. How can I best serve my clients this month and next?

What do your clients need from you in order to be successful this holiday season? Perhaps it’s as simple as revisiting their goals and making sure they’re realistic for the holidays. Or maybe your clients want that extra accountability from you to help them stick to their workouts this winter.

→ Tip: You could always create a fun challenge for accountability! One of my most successful challenges was an attendance challenge at the studio. Participating clients got points for making their regularly scheduled workouts and bonus points for working out 30 minutes outside of their scheduled sessions (ex: a walk or yoga workout at home) or for scheduling an extra workout! Pick a prize for the top 1-3 winners and have them track on a calendar with stickers. You can print out a cute paper calendar and provide festive stickers to make it visually appealing and more fun. What adult doesn’t like a throwback to the fun sticker days?! You’d be surprised at how competitive grown adults get over gold stars!

  1. What can I do today to help prepare for new clients coming in January?

We all know that January through March can be crazy-packed for personal trainers as people head our way to help them fulfill their New Year’s Resolutions. Now is the time for you to start planning ahead and preparing for how you’ll funnel these clients your way and how you’ll keep them with you. Here are some ideas for how you can prepare:

→ Create a special New Year program that encourages client retention. For example, create a program that requires at least a 3-month commitment to give them a better chance at reaching their goals and accountability for sticking with it.

→ Adjust your marketing techniques and language to attract your ideal customer. There are many resources out there to help you do this, but it’s well worth your time to attract the right client for your programs.

**MOST IMPORTANT** Schedule some rest for yourself before the New Year rush happens. There’s nothing worse than heading into the busiest season already exhausted. You need to prioritize taking care of you before you can take care of others.
