I remember the day that I decided that I wanted to become a personal trainer. I was in the weight room at the University of Houston talking with some of the strength coaches after a workout. It was my senior year, so a common question that people would ask was, “So, what are you going to do after you graduate?”. I remember telling the strength coaches that I had always loved working out, I loved the idea of helping others reach their health and fitness goals, and with my degree in Health Promotion/Behavioral Sciences, it seemed like personal training would be a great fit. They agreed and then they generously offered me advice on how to take steps to become a personal trainer. From that day until my graduation, I day-dreamed about meeting with clients, helping them brainstorm ways to cultivate a healthier lifestyle, and, of course, delivering great workouts. Little did I know, that decision would lead me straight into a career that I absolutely love.

Why did you choose personal training?

It’s a question that you may have been asked before, but if you haven’t, what would your answer be? What’s YOUR why?

Understanding your why is important for many reasons.

→ It helps fuel you on tough days, and as a trainer there are certainly tough days!

→ Your why can help you find your niche population when you’re first starting out.

→ It can also motivate you to continue to grow and improve as a trainer.

→ Most importantly, your why reminds you that what you do matters. How you show up each day matters. YOU matter.

As personal trainers, I truly believe that we change the world one client at a time. Cheesy, yes, but it doesn’t change my opinion on the matter!

This month I challenge you to write down your why and put it somewhere that you’ll see on a daily basis to serve as a reminder of why you do what you do.
